Carol Marine

Still Life - Small Paintings - Oils

March 18, 19 & 20, 2011

9:00 – 4:00 pm

$400.00

Carol graduated in the fall of 2001 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art with a focus on painting. She has been featured in local and national magazines (including Southwest Art). She received a Jury’s Top 50 award at the Salon International Exhibit in 2008. Recently she moved to Bastrop, Texas, where she has set up her studio.

There is a fast growing group of people, called daily painters, who do small paintings every day, post photographs of their paintings on a blog, and then sell them through eBay, with a usual starting price of $100. In this way, many artists are finding they can grow quickly in skill and finally make a living with their art, after struggling for years in galleries and at art fairs. Carol has 3+ years of experience daily painting and teaching workshops around the US and Canada.

www.bluecloudstudios.com

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Whether you are painting for a living or hobby, painting small and often is a powerful way to rapidly improve your skills.

Whether you are painting for a living or hobby, painting small and often is a powerful way to rapidly improve your skills. We will spend most of our time on the basic principles of design – the rules of composition, value, color, and shape – and how to apply them to small still lives. We will then experiment with color relationships using an alternative to the traditional color wheel, explore color mixing, and how each color “leans” towards others. We will push our compositions to avoid “floating” objects and learn the one, simple rule to avoid a boring still life. There will be daily demos, handouts and one-on-one critiques.

Finally, we will learn how to set up a blog, the in’s and out’s of eBay, shipping and marketing your work, etc. There will be reference material on this to take home.

A passionate traveler, Joe Anna enjoys painting wherever she goes, often combining the experience with teaching plein air workshops.  www.joeannaarnett.com

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
In this workshop, we will paint from fresh flowers and still life compositions.  Artists will use these subjects as the starting point to examine some of the very fundamentals of painting.  Mastery of these fundamentals will give you artistic freedom to explore in any direction your own creativity may direct you. When these basic concepts become second nature, artists are released to express their own voice in their own way.  Understanding light and color temperature, values, the varieties of edges and the expressive use of impasto brings a level of confidence that allows you to become the artist you want to be.

The painters are encouraged to request specific demonstrations, lecture topics and discussions throughout the event.  Because every class is different and because all levels will be accepted, there will be varying interests.  Each painter is important and at a different point in their development.  Helping and encouraging each artist at their own level of development will be an emphasis of this workshop.

The emphasis however, will not be on finished paintings, but on this process to achieve more fulfilling and successful works. Finished pieces are not the goal here, more starts, mistakes and failures could be the order of the day, but you should leave with some better ideas on getting better ideas and compositions that are more compelling to you and the viewer. We will talk a lot about composition and the unbalance of values and shapes along with color harmony. Artist should be prepared to work from their own photos and/or field studies and I will have a wide selection of photos that you may work from. We will make mistakes, work hard and have a good time doing it.
