Joan Fullerton

Contemporary Approaches for Greater Self-Expression

Friday, Saturday & Sunday,

November 4, 5 & 6, 2016

9:00 – 4:00pm

$450.00

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Paint freely, find your own voice, and be happy in the process! Give yourself the gift of more imaginative art. Experience inspiring demonstrations and lectures, and get feedback and support while exploring new concepts.  Let’s discover deeper meanings to the intricacies of shape, line and color. You’ll learn to coax hints of reality from an abstract background, how to control values and colors for emotional emphasis, and how to suggest rather than delineate. You’ll explore working intuitively, responding to what shows up; working in a series; and will learn the mixing and utilizing of neutrals for softer, more ethereal abstracts. We’ll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, play, metaphor, symbolism, and competition. You will create compelling art not only by focusing on technique, but will discover your unique "content". Beginning students will find encouragement and confidence, while more advanced students will benefit from Joan's insightful solutions to their artistic challenges. Be prepared for a light-hearted imaginative experience!

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Born into a Wyoming ranch family, I grew up with a deep regard for the natural world. For me the subtle nuances as well as the awesome power of nature’s beauty, made the solitude of the isolated prairie sacred. While raising 3 children, I studied watercolor with Edgar Whitney, Frank Webb, Charles Reid and other nationally known watercolorist. In 1985 I returned to college and achieved BFA and MFA degrees in painting from the University of Wyoming. I was a college art instructor from 1990 to 2003 in Cheyenne, WY. And in 2003 I fulfilled a long time dream when I moved to Taos, NM, to paint full-time. After 8 successful years in Taos, I am now in the Denver, CO area, painting and teaching workshops.

Charlie Hunter

Plein Air Oil Painting

Friday, Saturday & Sunday,
 September 9, 10 & 11, 2016
9:00 am - 4:00 pm

$400.00

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

As word has spread about Charlie Hunter’s distinctive work, curiosity has arisen about how he goes about making a painting. Why water-mixable oils? Is it true that a squeegee is involved? And what about those Stim-U-Dents we keep hearing about? All will be revealed. We'll go over some simple, yet invaluable tools for accurate rendering, and talk about how sketching for 20 minutes a day can bring inner peace... We'll sketch and paint, and Charlie will expound and instruct about his approach to making dynamic paintings. We'll learn and laugh a lot while staying true to the credo of have big fun; make big mess.

There will be plenty of time for painting, daily discussions and critique, as well as multiple Hunter demos for those curious to witness the full act of plein-air murkiness
and the use of water-mixable oils, window squeegees,
cheap brushes, toothpicks and cotton swabs to achieve a distinct lack of clarity.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Hunter describes his work as “drippy portraits of rotting American infrastructure.” His painting process involves careful observation, sketching and use of muted, earth-toned palette in water-mixable oil. Hunter is the recipient of numerous plein air painting awards, was the subject of a recent feature in PLEIN AIR Magazine and has served as an instructor at the last three Plein Air Conventions in Monterey, California. He exhibits in galleries and museums across the US and his work is viewable on line at:

9:00 – 4:00pm

$350.00

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Many landscape paintings benefit from the vitality that figures provide; yet so often we shy away from painting them. We tell ourselves that we’re not good enough or don’t know enough.

 believable figures in your landscapes.

This class is geared to artists at all levels. We’ll explore a variety of ways to use the human form as an accent, point of interest or dominant character in any landscape painting.

Kevin Beilfuss

An Intuitive Approach:

Figure & Portrait Painting

 October 23, 24 & 25, 2015
9:00 am - 4:00 pm

$400.00

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

In this workshop Kevin will emphasize a more intuitive
way to look at drawing and painting. Learning to see “impressionistically”, the ability to suggest, rather than render the subject will be explored. Demonstrations will be done every morning, followed by students exploring what was taught during the demonstration.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Kevin’s work has been the subject of several one man shows as well as being included in such prestigious annual shows as the Oil Painters of America, The Great American Figurative Shows and Salon International. Kevin’s award-winning artwork can be seen in galleries throughout the U.S.

After graduating from Illinois State University and the American Academy of Art, Kevin set out on a free-lance illustration career which lasted thirteen years. The demands of painting someone else’s ideas finally took its toll. It was time to paint from his heart and what was important to him.

Ratindra Das

Watercolor Workshop

Friday, Saturday & Sunday,

March 13, 14 & 15, 2015

9:00 – 4:00pm

$350.00

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
You shall be encouraged to respond to the image as much with instinct and intuition as with intellect and experience. The goal of this workshop will be to capture and express in watercolors our feelings, impressions and emotions relating to our surroundings. Day one, we will produce a recognizable image. Using wet into wet techniques, movement and mixing of colors on the paper will be the priority. In the succeeding days we will progress towards releasing you from your need to see something recognizable in your work. Inspired by the garden environment, the focus shall increasingly become color and composition for their own sake. We will work towards expressing the spirit of our surroundings without creating literal images.
Success is not guaranteed but the effort will affect your future approach to painting. Beauty is a perception. It does not need to be an image of something. Good art is more than just recording the image in front of you.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Ratindra Das is a Dolphin Fellow and a signature member of the American Watercolor Society. He is also a signature member of National Watercolor Society and six other watercolor societies and holds Master status in the Transparent Watercolor Society of America.  He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago and studied with many nationally known artists. Frank Francese

Watercolor Workshop

Friday, Saturday & Sunday,

 October 24, 25 & 26, 2014

9:00 am - 4:00 pm

$350.00

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Frank Francese has resided in Colorado for most of his life.
He has been a professional artist since 1976. His liquid style is unique and distinctive. Frank enjoys working on a very wet surface, letting the pure color mix itself on the paper. His shapes are large and loose,
often disregarding fine detail. Frank uses abrupt color changes
of the same value with the wet of the watercolor paper to bring his
paintings to life. The subject matter for Francese watercolors is always varied, reflecting his national and international travels as well as local western Colorado scenes.

The signature of a Francese watercolor is his use of big shapes,
color, color and more color! No matter where a Francese watercolor is displayed, it will radiate a flash of color that literally jumps
off the wall, immediately capturing the eye of the casual
 observer and art critic alike.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Each day includes two demonstrations. The demonstration will be 40-60 minutes in length, leaving the student to have ample time to work on their painting using the subject matter of that day’s demonstration. The goal of a Francese workshop is to teach artists of all skill levels to combine color, shape and then detail into a unique work of art.

Day 1 will be a nature scene, Day 2 will be a City scene, Day 3 will be a Beach scene

Barbara Courtney Jaenicke

Interpreting the Landscape

in Pastel or Oil

Friday, Saturday & Sunday,

 March 14, 15 & 16, 2014

9:00 am - 4:00 pm

$350.00

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

One of the biggest hurdles I’ve encountered as an artist is moving past the point of copying a scene to interpreting a scene. As beginners, we all start by learning the mechanics of rendering (or copying) the subject matter with our medium of choice. But eventually, we want to move past that and portray our own version of what we see before us…to find our own artistic voice and tell our own story. In this three-day workshop, we’ll work on exercises that will help you move out of the copying mode and into the interpretive mode. Plan to work on several small pieces during the course of the workshop, including a few small, quick thumbnails. I’ll begin each day of the workshop with demonstrations and then provide plenty of individual help at the easel for the remainder of each day.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

An artist since her teen years, Barbara started her art career as an advertising art director in 1986 and later worked in corporate marketing. She happily turned her focus to fine art in 2002, and began teaching in 2004. She was featured in the December 2011 issue of the Pastel Journal and is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and Oil Painters of America.

Currently living in Roswell, GA, Barbara teaches weekly classes in the Atlanta area and workshops around the country. Her work is represented at Stoneheart Gallery in Evergreen, CO, Watson Gallery in Atlanta, GA, and Raiford Gallery in Roswell, GA.

9:00 am – 4:00 pm

$350.00

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this 3 day portrait workshop is for students to better understand the stages of a portrait and the correlating visual principles of each stage. The workshop is broken up into three 1 day poses. Each day we will focus on a different stage of development and students will be able to progress further each day. There will be time spent on proportion, value relationships, warm & cool colors and basic color theory and edges. The instructor will do demonstrations as well as help students with their paintings. Students will leave with three portraits each focusing on a different level of completion and greater understanding of the visual principles and visual tools one builds with.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Kerry Dunn is a contemporary academic oil painter working in both the looser style of alla prima as well as the more rendered style of long painting. 9:00 – 4:00 pm

$400.00

Carol graduated in the fall of 2001 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art with a focus on painting. She has been featured in local and national magazines (including Southwest Art). She received a Jury’s Top 50 award at the Salon International Exhibit in 2008. Recently she moved to Bastrop, Texas, where she has set up her studio.

There is a fast growing group of people, called daily painters, who do small paintings every day, post photographs of their paintings on a blog, and then sell them through eBay, with a usual starting price of $100. In this way, many artists are finding they can grow quickly in skill and finally make a living with their art, after struggling for years in galleries and at art fairs. Carol has 3+ years of experience daily painting and teaching workshops around the US and Canada.

www.bluecloudstudios.com

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Whether you are painting for a living or hobby, painting small and often is a powerful way to rapidly improve your skills.

Whether you are painting for a living or hobby, painting small and often is a powerful way to rapidly improve your skills. We will spend most of our time on the basic principles of design – the rules of composition, value, color, and shape – and how to apply them to small still lives. We will then experiment with color relationships using an alternative to the traditional color wheel, explore color mixing, and how each color “leans” towards others. We will push our compositions to avoid “floating” objects and learn the one, simple rule to avoid a boring still life. There will be daily demos, handouts and one-on-one critiques.

Finally, we will learn how to set up a blog, the in’s and out’s of eBay, shipping and marketing your work, etc. There will be reference material on this to take home.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
In this workshop, we will paint from fresh flowers and still life compositions.  Artists will use these subjects as the starting point to examine some of the very fundamentals of painting.  Mastery of these fundamentals will give you artistic freedom to explore in any direction your own creativity may direct you. When these basic concepts become second nature, artists are released to express their own voice in their own way.  Understanding light and color temperature, values, the varieties of edges and the expressive use of impasto brings a level of confidence that allows you to become the artist you want to be.

The painters are encouraged to request specific demonstrations, lecture topics and discussions throughout the event.  Because every class is different and because all levels will be accepted, there will be varying interests.  Each painter is important and at a different point in their development.  Helping and encouraging each artist at their own level of development will be an emphasis of this workshop.
